10/10/08 Have a great weekend, and I apologize in advance to the Texas fans... Boomer Sooner! Go OU!

No homework this weekend. We will have our spelling test on Monday. The spelling words are:
box, fox, dog, lock, pot, cone, hope, poke, rose, rope, side, nine, America, world, country, wrinkled, settled, practiced, favorite, cuddled. The last five are the vocabulary words.

The sign-up sheet for parent/teacher conferences is in the front atrium on the trophy case. Take a second to sign up. If none of those times are good for you, please contact me and I will try to accommodate your schedule.

Also, you should have received a notice about the upcoming science fair. Both Mrs. Cox and I require our students to enter the science fair. We will be sending out additional information next week, but it is not too early to have your student start thinking about a project.

God bless,
Mr. Lang

10/09/08 Homework for tonight is Math 37b and study for the spelling test and the upcoming math fact test. (Over sums of 10 facts.)

Today, during Religion, we discussed the importance of oil in the sacrament of Confirmation. In ancient times, oil was used to anoint the ruling class. Today we use oil to seal us with the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Ask your student what the oil means. (It helps us to be strong in our faith and comforts us.)

In math,we learned how to put things in pairs. Ask your student what a pair means. (two matched objects, each item has a partner) We talked about how 6 socks can make 3 pairs. But, if we have 5 socks we can only make 2 pair with one sock left over.

In language arts we reviewed predicates, commas, and started learning when to use quotation marks.
When we work with commas, we are only working on them when we separate a town and state or in the date between the day and the year.
We are making sure we know the subject of a sentence is who or what the sentence is about. The predicate tells what the subject does or is. For example: Rick is a good artist. Rick is the subject, is a good artist is the predicate.

God bless,
Mr. Lang

10/08/08 Homework for tonight is Math 36B.

Today in math we worked on adding 10 to a number. We used the hundred number chart to see that by adding 10 we don't change the number in the ones column, we just change the number in the tens column.
On their homework, they are shown a piece of the hundreds number chart and asked to figure out what the missing numbers are. When we move right or left on the chart we either add one or subtract one. If we move up or down, we either subtract 10 or add 10. This helps us to see the place value of the digits.

In language arts, we are learning how to summarize. We are trying to select the most pertinent parts of the story and use those parts to summarize. Today we read about Yoon, a girl from Korea. We decided, as a class, that the most important parts of the story were:
1. Yoon had trouble in school because she didn't want to write her name in English.
2. Yoon was sad because she wanted to go back to her home in Korea and had no friends in America.
3. Yoon made a friend and she discovered the teacher liked her. So she now likes America and her school.
If you have time, ask your student to recap the story for you and see if they come fairly close to my recap. Usually, children at this age have a hard time condensing and want to tell you the whole story. Encourage them to just stick to the main points.

I also told the class that we would have cuddle and favorite as spelling words. (These are two of our vocabulary words.) I will also be adding settled, practiced and wrinkled. We will most likely have our spelling test on Monday.

I hope you have a good evening and God Bless,
Mr. Lang

10/07/08 I hope your child enjoyed the field trip as much as I did. Ask your student which plant they thought was the biggest surprise. For example, when I was near the pineapples, quite a few students were looking up asking, "where are they" until someone pointed down to the pineapple plant. Also, did anyone else think the mangoes were hard to find? Then, who knew that coconuts are green when they are on the tree? Finally, my favorites, aren't orchids beautiful?
When we got back to class we watched a video on the rain forest. Ask your student what ants in the rain forest eat. (They cut leaves, regurgitate a slimy substance on the leaves and then wait for a fungus to grow on the leaves. They then eat the fungus.)

No homework tonight except for studying the spelling words and math facts.

10/06/08 Remember the field trip is tomorrow!!! Please send a sack lunch with your child for the trip tomorrow. Our class at the gardens will start at 10:00 and end at noon. Then we will eat our sack lunches at the gardens. If the weather is nice, we will eat outside. We plan to return by 1:30.
Dress for tomorrow will be jeans and spirit shirts or regular uniform. NO JEAN SHORTS OR JEAN SKIRTS!
If you have signed up to drive you need to be here by 8:45. Mr. Lang and I will give instructions and then we will start dismissing students.
In order to help save gas and take up less parking spots, I have paired up some parent drivers. On the form I have marked who has to drive out of that group with a star. If for some reason, you do not want to pair up or decide you want the other person to drive, SEE ME before making any decisions that change the groups or drivers.

There is no homework that is to be returned tonight. Although, the new spelling list is in your student's agenda. Also, the math facts are the sums of 10. You could work on those tonight.

Thank you for helping your student with their community project. I hope your student got something out of completing the project.

Pray for good weather tomorrow,
Mr. Lang

10/03/08 There should be no homework this weekend. Although I noticed not everyone turned in the math paper number 35. So if your student has it, it does need to be turned in on Monday. Once again, they had plenty of time to complete both sides in class.

We had our first A.R. store today. Ask your student what they "bought" with the tickets they earned from reading their A.R. books. (One ticket per point earned.) They could also save their tickets to earn their way to a bigger prize.

If your student is involved in extra-curricular activities, such as softball, soccer, football, etc., if you give me their schedule, I will try and make some of their events. I enjoy watching my students outside of the classroom setting.

Remember, community projects are due this Monday.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend,
Mr. Lang
