Afternoon August 26, 2008
Today we talked about sentences and writing questions. We talked about how to end questions with question marks.
We read a story about a boy named David and his first day of school. Ask what David was afraid of and how did he show how he was brave.
In science we have started talking about living and nonliving things. Ask your child how you figure out if something is living or nonliving.
Here is the spelling list for the test on Friday:
1. has
2. wag
3. bad
4. six
5. will
6. sat
7. had
8. fix
9. him
10. if
11. can
12. hit
13. blue
14. even
15. study
Some ways to practice the words would be to have the child sound out each individual letter and practice blending the sounds to make the words. Also sort them into words that have short a sound, short i sound, and words that don't fit either of those catagories. Help them associate that words such as six and fix only change one letter. If they can spell six they can spell fix.
Remember Mass tomorrow!

I've had many people volunteer to help with class parties and other activites, but I would like to dedicate one person as a contact person for me as a go between, incase we need something organized for the classroom. Let me know if you would like to be that person. Also, if you would like to organize a specific party such as Christmas or Halloween, please let me know and I'll mark you as the organizer for that party.
Also you may have noticed only 15 words in your child's agenda. These are all the new words for the test, but I will add five words from last week's list to make a spelling list of 20 words.
Remember book orders are due on Thursday, August 27.

Well, we've completed our first full week of school. We are starting to get familiar with the daily routine that we will have all year. I have been explain my expectations to the class as we go through assignments and other daily work.
Today before and during the spelling test, I discussed with the class the importance of making sure the letters are lowercase and in the right spots on the lines. For example tall letters go to the top line, everything stops at the baseline unless it has a decender and almost all short letters stop at the midline. If your child started words with capitals I just wrote it with the lowercase letter next to the word. I did not take off this time for the mistake, but I told them I would next time. If letters were backwards however, the word is counted wrong. I tell them repeatedly to check their letters with the alphabet on the wall and on the nametag on their desk.
Number 21 on the spelling test is a bonus word. They do not get points taken off if it is spelled wrong, but they do get 5 extra points if it is right. Since it was a month it had to have the capital letter. I told them this as they were writing the word. So just some information of expectations on the spelling test.
I also talked to the class about sentence writing. We will go over how to write a sentence in more detail in the coming weeks, but it is my expectaion that they write using complete sentences.
For the religion test, I wrote the following on the board: 9. Jesus taught us___________. Jesus showed us_____________. Then we went over things to put in the blanks. I told them they needed to copy that off the board and fill in the blank with something we had talked about. If your child did not do that then it was counted incorrect. I did not count off for missed periods since this is something we are still working on. I did the same thing for number 10. I wrote 10. Jesus taught us the____________________. We pray this __________________________. We talked about what would go in those blanks and copying the sentences off the board.
So please stress to your child the importance of following directions and listening to instructions. We've really been trying to work on it this week.
Also at the parent meeting, I forgot to tell you all that e-mail is a great way to communicate with me. If everyone could send me an e-mail with your child's name on it, I can add you to a class e-mail, so I can send information out to everyone at once.
Thanks so much for your help!!
